Automation in the manufacture of glass containers is a relatively recent phenomenon dating back to early 1900 when, following numerous trials, the first machine was built for the automatic manufacture of glass vessels and their production in series. The complete mechanisation of the process led to mass production, and from 1925 onwards machines were launched onto the market with individual sections, starting off with a four-section machine and evolving through to the 20 sections we now have today.<\/p>\n
The United Nations have proclaimed 2022 as the International Year of Glass (IYoG 2022), inviting its member states to adopt measures to raise people\u2019s awareness of the importance of glass in everyday life. The UN describes glass as follows: \u201cWith its unparalleled versatility and technical capabilities, glass in its many guises has fostered innumerable cultural and scientific advancements\u201d.<\/p>\n
The fact is that glass has left its imprint on human history through its numerous properties: it is transparent, inert, resistant to chemicals, recyclable (thereby fostering the circular economy), and one of the most efficient electrical insulators we know of. These properties render it of use for current applications such as fibre optics and smart glass capable of switching between transparent and opaque, as well as for some dating back as far as the 14th<\/sup> century with the discovery of lenses that have led to major scientific advances through the use of microscopes.<\/p>\n Yet glass has been with us for 4,000 years, when it was already being used in Egypt and Mesopotamia for making containers. One of the landmarks in the history of glass containers was recorded in 1790, when the inventor Nicolas Appert produced airtight jars for food preservation, a milestone that has unquestionably gone on to transform the food industry to this very day.<\/p>\n Today, glass plants operate 24\/7 in a process in which robotics and automation play a crucial role. La mecanizaci\u00f3n completa del proceso permiti\u00f3 la fabricaci\u00f3n a gran escala, y a partir de 1925 se van incorporando m\u00e1quinas al mercado con secciones individuales, comenzando por ser una m\u00e1quina de 4 secciones y hasta nuestros d\u00edas cuando podemos encontrar m\u00e1quinas de hasta 20 secciones.<\/p>\n Naciones Unidas ha declarado 2022 A\u00f1o Internacional del Vidrio (IYoG 2022, en sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) invitando a sus estados miembros a encaminar actuaciones que aumenten la conciencia sobre la importancia del vidrio en la vida cotidiana. La ONU define el vidrio como \u201celemento transformador de la humanidad, cient\u00edfica, econ\u00f3mica, ambiental y culturalmente\u201d.<\/p>\n Y es que este material ha marcado la historia humana por sus m\u00faltiples cualidades: es transparente, inerte, resistente a qu\u00edmicos, reciclable (lo que potencia la econom\u00eda circular) y uno de los mejores aislantes el\u00e9ctricos conocidos. Estas propiedades lo hacen valioso para utilidades actuales como la fibra \u00f3ptica, los vidrios inteligentes capaces de oscurecerse o traslucirse, o ya desde el siglo XIV con el descubrimiento de las lentes que aportar\u00edan grandes avances cient\u00edficos con el uso del microscopio.<\/p>\n Pero el vidrio est\u00e1 aqu\u00ed desde hace 4000 a\u00f1os, cuando ya en Egipto y Mesopotamia se utilizaba para la creaci\u00f3n de recipientes. Uno de los momentos m\u00e1s destacados del envase de vidrio se dio en 1790 cuando el investigador Nicolas Appert desarroll\u00f3 los tarros de conserva, un hito que sin duda revolucion\u00f3 la industria alimentaria desde entonces.<\/p>\n Hoy en d\u00eda las f\u00e1bricas de vidrio funcionan 24 horas al d\u00eda y 365 d\u00edas al a\u00f1o, en un proceso en el que la aplicaci\u00f3n de la rob\u00f3tica y la automatizaci\u00f3n tiene un papel fundamental.
